Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Why should middle school students take Bistro Languages classes, and for how many years?
Taking language classes in middle school helps students lay a strong foundation before high school.
However, while official high school credit is only awarded once students reach high school, early study allows them to:
● Enter high school at a more advanced level (often skipping Levels 1–2);
● Free up space in their high school schedule for electives, AP courses, or other subjects by only taking one or two years of language in HS.
Therefore, most middle school students take two years of language study with us. As a result, by the time they start high school, they are prepared to enroll directly in higher-level courses and continue toward advanced or AP-equivalent study.
How do high school students receive and transfer credit for Bistro Languages courses?
Bistro Languages courses are UC A–G approved (World Language “e”) and NCAA approved. Moreover, they are recognized by many school districts.
Here’s how the credit transfer process works:
● First, we work with your district up front by completing any required intent or approval forms;
● Next, at the end of the semester, we issue an official grade report with course title, dates, instructor of record, and contact hours;
● Finally, these reports are mapped to your district’s course codes and credit units, so your school can record the credit on your transcript.
How do you support students who want to earn the Seal of Biliteracy?
Our courses prepare students to meet Seal of Biliteracy requirements by providing:
- ACTFL-aligned curriculum that develops listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills;
- Additionally, progress reports that document growth across proficiency levels;
- Furthermore, guidance on meeting state/district requirements, including external language assessments where needed.
As a result, many of our students have successfully earned the Seal of Biliteracy in Russian, Portuguese, or Ukrainian.
How do you support students who want to take AP or AP-equivalent language tests?
Although there is no College Board AP exam in Russian, Portuguese, or Ukrainian, students can take the NEWL (National Examinations in World Languages), which is recognized by the College Board as AP-equivalent.
What languages does Bistro Languages teach?
We specialize in rarely taught world languages for high school students:
- Russian;
- Portuguese;
- Ukrainian.
Furthermore, all languages are offered in four-year sequences with small-group, live online instruction. In addition, 1:1 tutoring is also available.
What standards and assessments do you use?
Our curriculum is ACTFL-aligned. Therefore, students complete unit performance tasks, quizzes, exams, and speaking/writing evaluations.
In addition, external assessments include AP, NEWL and AVANT test scores. Furthermore, we provide progress reports during the semester and official grade reports at the end.
How do classes work?
First, students join small-group live online classes (or 1:1 if requested). Additionally, in-person 1-on-1 sessions are also available.
Next, a brief placement assessment ensures they are placed at the right level. Finally, classes emphasize communication, culture, and proficiency across all four skills.
What accreditations and recognitions does Bistro Languages have?
First, our school is WASC Accredited, which means we meet rigorous standards of quality and accountability. Additionally, we are UC A–G Approved – our world language courses fulfill the “e” (Language Other Than English) requirement for UC admissions.
Furthermore, our courses are NCAA Approved, meaning they are recognized for student-athletes maintaining NCAA Eligibility. Finally, we are District-Recognized – our classes are approved for credit in multiple districts, including San Diego Unified (SDUSD), San Dieguito Union (SDUHSD), Fremont Union (FUHSD), and others.
